Pearl Harbor
December 7, 1941, the date that will live on in infamy; those were the words President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke on December 8, 1941.
President Roosevelt was referring to the Japanese bombing attack on Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor is located in the Pacific Ocean, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The U.S. had 2 army bases there and it was also a place for ships to re-fuel.
On that day, the U.S. had 25 ships in the harbor; fortunately, all of our aircraft carriers had been sent out to sea before the attack started. The Japanese successfully sunk 14 ships, damaged 8 other ships and destroyed 188 planes. During the attack, 2,403 people died. This was a day that shocked the entire nation.
The Japanese military knew their attack on Pearl Harbor was a success; however, they worried that the only impact it might have had was to “wake a sleeping giant.” They were correct the giant woke up and the U.S. joined the Allied Forces and WW2 began.
So this December 7th, remember the attack on Pearl Harbor. If you know anyone, who has or is currently serving in the military, tell them or give them your thanks. Be proud to be an American!
